Eileen Guernsey Brown is a transplanted Californian, making Salt Lake City her home since 1976. She attended Pasadena City College, California (AA degree), then the University of Utah (BFA in Graphic Design ). Married with two grown children, Eileen spent her early professional career working as a graphic designer, later returned to the “U” to complete a degree in Education. Next spent 27 years employed by the Salt Lake School District, first teaching grades K-4, then 10 years teaching art in a middle school, channeling her creative energies into her students who won many awards in state contests and District Art Shows
In 2006 Eileen began painting herself, after a 30 year hiatus. Studying with several local artists and taking oil painting workshops established a strong foundation, along with lots of practice and perseverance. Now, painting has become a joyful obsession! Eileen paints on location whenever possible, as there is nothing quite like being outdoors capturing the light, the weather, and the atmosphere of a particular place. It is the interpretation of the landscape that inspires her, simplifying what the eye sees in order to create an impression through color and expressive brushwork.
"Art has opened up so many doors for me, and provided special opportunities to travel and meet other artists who share the same passion to paint. I hope to always continue learning from other artists, past and present, with the goal to share the natural beauty of our world with others —whether that be red rocks in Zion, or a bowl of summer roses from my garden. I think Edgar Degas put it best when he said, 'Art is not what you see, but what you make otherssee.’"
Eileen is a member of the American Impressionist Society, Women out West, and has won numerous awards in Plein-air competitions in Driggs, Idaho, Midway, Utah, and Salt Lake City, Utah. She has exhibited her work throughout Utah at various locations, including the State Fair, Red Butte Gardens, Zions Bank Annual Show, Pioneer Theatre Lodge Gallery, Slusser Gallery's Holiday Show, and the Eccles Annual Statewide Art Show.
