Richard Horrocks

As a representational artist, Richard (Dick) Horrocks’ oils are a masterful mix of impressionism and realism.  His compositions capture those often overlooked moments-in-time.  Realistic scenes, narrative and personal, portray everyday life and communicate a commonality with the viewer.  Dick creates mood and captures his unique perspectives by controlling the visual stimuli - color, texture, edges and value, through the looseness and luminescent quality of his oils.  His exceptional versatility and excellence in painting all subject matter from land, city and sea scapes to still life, portraits and western art, brands his professional, artistic strength.
Through a lifetime of study, the influence of past and contemporary painters, and plenty of practice and hard work, Dick’s trained technical skills blend with his intuitive skills, and translate unspoken dialogues into the language of his canvas.

" For, me, … Art is a dance with God that one steps into with hesitant courage. Some few, but glorious times, the rhythm of the dance fills ones' soul and your brush moves as though carried on the back of some impudent muse.
Often, … one slogs through the morose of doubting confusion. But, ahh, … the few times I can dance with the muse, elevates me to such a celestial high that I catch a glimpse of God.
My favored medium is oil because of its looseness and luminescent quality. I can see my brushwork continues to be influenced by the soft, informal impressionism that inspired me in my youth. Artistic abilities came naturally; Artistic growth came with work. My intuitive skills have been defined and clarified through study and constant art education; from practice, practice, practice, and perseverance; professional memberships and participation in art shows and competitions; giving art lessons to adults; and my long time associations with fellow artists in Utah. Painting portraits and character studies is my preference; although I enjoy painting in a variety of genres. My subject matter changes with whatever catches my eye – and moves my soul."
