Suzette Gertsch

Born in Kalispell Montana. Susette has painted since age 12. For the past 8 years she has immersed herself in the study and practice of Plein air, and studio painting. After traveling to Europe in 2009, to paint and visit museums, Gertsch decided to write a personal contract with herself. The challenge was to create 300 paintings en Plein air, within a year. She completed that goal through the extremes and pleasures of all seasons, and reveled in the experience. Before, during, and after, completing the project, titled, "The Limness Contract", Susette found an exciting direction through Plein air painting competitions. In 2012 she was fortunate to win several awards, which have inspired and encouraged her further. Another stepping-stone was joining Oil Painters of America. Gertsch's first entry in this national association was accepted in the 2012 Western Regional Show, held in Denver, Colorado. Currently Suzette has 23 paintings on display in the secured gallery at the Covey Center for Fine Arts, Provo, Utah. Susette Gertsch looks forward with keen anticipation to many years of competitions, exhibits and teaching opportunities. The fire burns within!

ARTIST STATEMENT:

When something like making marks enlivens me, head to toe, I know I'm having a very
good painting day. This often happens; when I forget the world, and place myself
squarely before the canvas, brush in hand. Something indescribable is generated, strokeby-
stroke, and I count every one of these experiences as a gift.
This is not about holding a death grip on the brush or the moment. This is a matter of
being at genuine peace with myself. It means being focused, aware and open to what
wants to go down in paint, whether it is done in my cozy studio or in the unpredictable
wilds of the landscape.
